Homemade Tortilla Chips served with Creamy Guacamole
It's five o'guac somewhere... Why not enjoy these delicious and easy-to-make homemade tortilla chips with some fresh guacamole as a tasty snack or appetizer?! 😋Chips and guac are a fan favorite and truthfully, it's hard to go wrong with this recipe.Another fun thing about this recipe is that it's flexible! The seasonings I use in this recipe are my go-to for a salty and savory chip, but that doesn't mean that the seasonings can't be played around with and changed very easily. So if these seasonings aren't your thing, or you want to try something new, here are a couple ideas for alternative toppings you could try:Spicy: Try Mrs. Dash Salt-Free Spicy Seasoning. I love using this seasoning because it adds a spicy flavor to dishes without increasing the sodium amount in the dish! This is a great way you can incorporate one of the principles of intuitive eating known as gentle nutrition into a dish.Gentle nutrition doesn't mean making a rule for yourself such as, "I can only use sodium-free seasonings to flavor my dishes in order to be healthy."Gentle nutrition is being aware of the sodium amount in seasonings and choosing sodium-free seasonings you truly enjoy, especially if you notice you feel better when you eat less sodium or if eating low sodium is important to you for medical reasons. But again, DON'T TURN IT INTO A RULE...rules around food can make you fall right back into the diet trap.Sweet: If you're craving something sweet, try melting some butter and brushing that over the cut up tortillas instead of oil. Then sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over the tortillas. Bake for the same amount of time and enjoy a sweet treat! This is a chance where you can also play around with different herbs and spices and see what flavors you like best by taste-testing different seasonings...get curious and creative!
Baked Tortilla Chips
Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 12 minutes Yield: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
- 12 corn or flour tortillas (I used six corn and six flour tortillas in the image above)
- 1-2 Tbsp. avocado oil or any other oil of your choice
- 2 Tbsp. cumin
- 1 Tbsp. chili lime seasoning*
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1-2 tsp salt
*you can use chili powder and squeeze lime juice over the baked chips as a replacement for chili lime seasoning
Directions:
- Heat oven to 350F and spray a baking pan with any cooking spray you have. Side note: If you don't have cooking spray, feel free to coat the bottom of the pan lightly with oil
- Stack six tortillas on top of each other on a cutting board. Using a pizza cutter, kitchen sheers, or a chef's knife, cut the tortillas into either four or six triangles depending on the size of chip you want, example below
- Spread a single layer of cut-up tortillas across the baking pan, you may need to use more than one baking pan if you can't fit all the tortillas on a single pan
- Using a brush or your fingertips, spread oil across each tortilla chip. It doesn't have to be perfect, just try to get some oil on each chip
- Mix up all the seasonings in a small bowl and sprinkle evenly over tortilla chips. Side note: You may need to mix up more seasoning depending on how much you spread over each tortilla. You can also sprinkle any extra seasoning you have over the tortillas after they are done baking
- Bake tortilla chips for 6 minutes on one side; take out and flip, then bake for another 4-6 minutes on the other side
- Let the chips cool for about 5 minutes, then pour them into a serving bowl or store them in a closed container or bag. Side note: If you're storing this recipe, I recommend doing so for no longer than a week as these homemade tortilla chips won't stay fresh for as long as the store-bought version will
Guacamole
Prep time: 5-10 minutes Yield: 2-3 cups
Ingredients:
- 3 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted, and mashed
- 2 Tbsp of your favorite guacamole seasoning -- Side note: you can find guacamole seasonings at any grocery store and it makes it so much simpler to make really tasty guacamole because someone has already put all of the right seasonings together for you. Guacamole seasoning can usually be found by the avocados in the produce section or nearby/in the herb and spice aisle... I always find them in a different spot in every store but those two spots are your best place to start! If you're looking for a lower-sodium seasoning, feel free to look up homemade guacamole seasoning or get creative and make your own with herbs and spices you have in your pantry
- Half of a lime, juiced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes -- Optional: -1/2 diced onion -- Side note: There isn't onion in the guacamole pictured above, but if you like onion in your guacamole, add some in :)
Directions:
- Mix together mashed avocados, guacamole seasoning, and desired amount of salt and pepper
- Squeeze lime juice over guacamole, you can use a lemon/lime press to make this easier for you Side note: Lime will not only give your guacamole more flavor but it will also help keep the guacamole fresh for a longer period of time, however, I always recommend eating guacamole within 1-2 days for the highest quality
- Mix diced tomatoes and optional onions into guacamole and enjoy with the delicious homemade chips 😋
