Building Healthy Habits: Why Accountability Makes All the Difference

Let’s face it: creating healthy habits that last long-term can feel overwhelming, especially when life gets busy, and you’re juggling a million things at once.

Think back to the goals you set for yourself in the New Year—are you still focused on them? Are you practicing habits that help you accomplish them?

Whether you’re trying to stay consistent with balanced meals, move your body more often, drink more water, or prioritize self-care, I’ve noticed that the keys to building lasting habits are having a plan, staying flexible, and finding accountability.

Let’s explore some tips for forming habits that stick—and how accountability can be a game-changer in reaching your goals.

Tips for Building Healthy Habits That Stick

1. Start Small and Build Gradually
Big changes can feel exciting and doable at first, but when results take time, the excitement can wear off—and the habits may fall apart. Starting with bite-sized goals is far more effective in the long run.

Instead of overhauling your entire routine, focus on one small habit at a time, like eating breakfast daily or setting aside just 5–10 minutes for movement. These little actions add up over time, building momentum and helping you achieve your long-term goals.

2. Make It Easy and Accessible
Habits stick when they fit seamlessly into your life, but it takes some upfront planning to make that happen. If you want to start your day with movement because it makes you feel more productive, set out your workout clothes and shoes the night before.

Want to eat more vegetables? Prep some carrots or broccoli for an easy snack, or plan to add them to a dish you’re already making.

3. Attach Habits to Existing Routines
Pairing new habits with established routines helps them feel more natural. For example:

  • Keep a water bottle on your bathroom counter and drink a glass of water after brushing your teeth.

  • Use your morning coffee time to journal gratitude or set intentions for the day.

4. Don’t Be Perfect—Be Flexible and Consistent
Perfection isn’t the goal; consistency and flexibility are. Life won’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay on track.

For example, maybe you planned to cook dinner at home, but the day got away from you, and takeout feels like the only option. That’s okay! Order takeout and make your home-cooked meal tomorrow.

If you miss a day or slip up, don’t let it derail you. Reflect, reset, and move forward.

5. Celebrate Small Wins
Recognize and reward yourself for every step forward, no matter how small it may seem. Whether it’s treating yourself to a new workout set, a relaxing evening with your favorite show, or a new journal, celebrating your wins keeps you motivated to keep going.

The Role of Accountability in Building Healthy Habits

We thrive on connection and support. Sharing your goals with others makes you more likely to follow through. Here’s why accountability is a key ingredient for success:

  • Motivation When You Need It Most: Tough days happen, and having a supportive group can make all the difference. Knowing someone is cheering you on keeps you going.

  • Consistency Through Check-Ins: Checking in with a group regularly keeps your goals top of mind and helps you stay on track.

  • A Safe Space for Problem-Solving: Everyone faces challenges. An accountability group gives you a place to share struggles and brainstorm solutions together.

  • Shared Inspiration: Hearing others’ stories and seeing their progress reminds you that you’re not alone—and that your goals are within reach.
